I Just Wanna Give.

advertisement

Today, I realized something. Something I've known for a good while but today I finally realized it: I just want to give.

Give. Help. Volunteer. Whatever you wanna call it. I wanna spend (most of) my life helping others. Not any god, not my country. People that need help. Be it helping an alcoholic that needs help getting through a rough time, spending a few hours in a hospital with someone who hasn't any family to visit them, it doesn't matter, not any more. Once I though 'helping' meant doing something that was for 'the greater good'. Something that would outlast me and you. You know, go to Africa, save a starving child, that kinda @!$%#. (All good if you have the opportunity too.) But you know what? I was wrong. Its about doing something, anything, be it big or small, that keeps someone else going. Living. Existing. Its about keeping people where the light is. It doesn't need to be a million miles away.

In a world where almost everyone is out for themselves I have decided to spend my time helping others, in any way that I can. Hey, that sounds a little corny, I hear you say. You're probably right. In fact, it kinda does. But if corny is doing something that brings a little hope into the sinking world we live in today then let it be corny.

Its time for me, and us all, to break free of the shackles of ourselves and start helping each other.

You never know, something good might come of it.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I like your ramblings, particularly this:

Its about doing something, anything, be it big or small, that keeps someone else going. Living. Existing. Its about keeping people where the light is. It doesn't need to be a million miles away.

This is so true! More people should look at what they can do in their own community. I have been working on an interview with a friend of mine who, with her sister, mentors teenage girls from their church.

The small things that you do can potentially have a huge impact on your community. If you can't think of anything to do local papers sometimes list volunteer activities.

Nicely done Acrone!

A very nice, touching piece you have written here. The wonderful thing about this, for me, is not just the desire to help, but the fact that you've come to the realization that there's something bigger to do in your world. You say you've known this for a while but just realized it... an epiphanic event worth noting. So, what is it that you'll do? How will you start this newly realized and rejuvinated self?

Go to volunteer centers and see what the have available for a start. Also, keeping on the look out for opportunity's to help out when I can. For example, I caught an ad by the local Red Cross community asking for helpers for an event this coming week, so I'm off to help out there.

Long term I hope to steer my career down with road of aid and volunteering. Although my I am studying my degree in Philosophy and Psychology I hope to do something along the aid line, wherever possible.

. The world needs more philosopher's to start acting and do less talking. Good for you!

You know, just for a fact, you don't have to do anything with clear intentions of helping another to be actually helping them.

There's a basic economic concept thought by Adam Smith that says that ones success benefits it's neighbors. A lot of people think this is one of the reasons capitalism works.

I believe that this also works socially and on another levels.

If I get benefit from something, so will everyone around me.

So I say, always think about yourself first, then others.

I'm not taking credit away in any way from volunteer work, I value it a lot. This is just an interesting side note that in my view fits the conversation.

Yes I am! :)

That's the famous metaphor that he used for the phenomenon.

Is that all common cultural knowledge or do you have some formation in economics?

No, it's not cultural knowledge, I don't think. And, no, I don't have a background in economics. I do think, however, that Adams' logic was good for the time, but not now. His idea causes a problem with "free-riding" and benefit. For example, if I contribute X percent of effort to fight global warming, for example, my efforts may go unnoticed by everyone else because everyone else isn't giving an equal percentage of effort. So, if the intention is to use, I don't know, 20% less electricity, which myself and five surrounding houses do, Billy-Bob, down the street decides to continue his normal usage and then he benefits from our actions. So, I guess I would want to know how free-riding is a good.

Your efforts are there, even if they are minimal. And they don't just benefit you, but everybody else too. Less energy consumption is less energy consumption. And there can be more causes. Imagine that you have one of those nosy neighbors that like do meddle with others. No imagine that when hearing that you are saving energy, he will save 30%. That's more of a socially view of the event. But the theory itself wasn't conceived on that terms. It was based on people's natural instinct of profit, of always do much more for instant, personal reward. Quick example: If I make profit of something, I will create capital. If I want more capital, I will invest the capital I've earned. Another example is taxes. If I earn more, the government will have more money.

I see where you're going with this, or rather, where Smith was going with this. However, it seems to me that paying taxes is the governments way of avoiding a free-riding society. Doesn't the government enforce tax laws so they can pay for the things we would normally reject if we had to donate the money?

I think this is more my point of view than Smith's. He had more macroeconomic views.

Taxes are often mistreated. People forget that they are compensated in many social politics like free education, social security, roads and etc. So I don't see it as enforced, it's really more of a civil obligation. If you avoid the taxes, you get penalised. So in way, I believe it does avoid free-riders.

Just in a related thought, if you got to jail because of being a non-tax payer you would still be a free-rider. A more expensive one, jailing someone is rather expensive. And while in jail, he will probably produce even less. So in way, something negative that you do will also have it's affect on people around you.

Acrone, This is the most uplifting article I have read in some time. The rest of you out there I want to verify that there is nothing sweeter than helping others in your community. My wife Bernice and I choose to be Senior Advocates years ago. She had worked in Law Enforcement and I as a carpenter her skills include EMT training and my carpentry has come in handy. Old folks in this country seldom receive help that they don't have to pay thru the nose for and one of my qualities is the ability to get materials at nothing or I trade for. We don't charge for labor or material. We also are the Meals on Wheels operatives. I assure you no one is more grateful than a senior. Most of them have one main wish and that is to be able to live out their lives in the home they raised their children in and they fear that they will end up abandoned in some county home for the elderly, it is our goal to see that not happen. In many cases we deal with friends of ours parents, they have been forced to move far away to earn a living and they to thank us. Any of you who have time can find different programs, from big brothers-big sisters, homeless shelters etc. It is so fulfilling to see the work you put out do someone good, We dealing with seniors hear every story one can imagine our oldest clients are in their mid 90s and it is amazing to hear about things they have experienced in those 90 years. Great Great Great article here.

I do work for several 'not for profits' during my free time. It feels good. Am I making a difference? When someone comes up to me and says thanks, I know I am. There are lots of things you can do. One of my favorites is the 'Make A Wish' foundation. It gives you a chance to bring a little light and happines into an otherwise dismal life. It also gives the family memories to hold onto after the little one passes on.

I applaud your sense of duty in helping others. I've seen many on this site denigrate wealthy people who are donating their time and money. It's not about how much, it's more that you did something, anything to help someone beside yourself.

Please go out and do whatever feels right to you. In the end, it will help you too!

I once read a quote about Tolstoy in my mother language, and it went something like this:

We only live to ourselves when we are living for others.

I tried to look it up in English and I found this ones

Only those live who do good.

I'm guessing they both have the same source, and it's just brilliant.

I try helping on the little things, running the extra mile for someone. It just makes you feel good.

But be careful, helping someone that doesn't want to be helped creates an extremely unpleasant situation.
